Living a healthy lifestyle is about more than eating healthy and exercising. It is important that we all take the time to enjoy life. Traveling is one of Dr. Kazmer’s favorite hobbies, and is a great way to fill your life with new experiences. However, you do not necessarily have to travel far to go on a memorable vacation. Here are 5 places to visit that are right here in our state.

1. The Outer Banks

The Outer Banks is a wonderful destination for adults and kids alike who love the beach and beach-related activities. From beautiful beaches to relax on to fishing and lighthouse tours, there’s plenty for everyone to enjoy.

2. Grandfather Mountain

There’s plenty of beautiful scenery to admire at Grandfather Mountain. While visiting, vacationers can walk across the Mile High Swinging Bridge, go for a hike, visit wildlife habitats, and even grab a bite to eat at Mildred’s Grill.

3. The Greensboro Arboretum

If you love plants, visit the Greensboro Arboretum. According to Greensboro Beautiful’s website, this “17-acre site features 10 woody plant collections, special display gardens, and distinctive structural features.”

4. The North Carolina Zoo

The North Carolina Zoo is another great option for a day trip, especially if you love wildlife. It is “the largest ‘natural habitat zoo’ in the United States,” according to their website. The zoo features African, North American, and Aviary exhibits. There is also a Giraffe Deck!

5. Charlotte

This city is a great place to visit whether it is just for the day or for an extended vacation. It offers several shopping areas, restaurants, art museums, and even a NASCAR Hall of Fame.

Why a NutriBullet Might be Right for You

It can be challenging to eat healthy, especially for those of us who find a chocolate chip cookie more appealing than a kale salad. However, it is important that we all consume the necessary fruits and vegetables so that our bodies are supplied with the proper nutrients.

The 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend that we consume “a variety of vegetables” and “whole fruits.”

A great way to pack all of these fruits and vegetables into your diet is by drinking healthy smoothies, and the NutriBullet is an excellent choice for smoothie making. According to the NutriBullet website, this machine uses Nutrient Extraction, which is different from traditional blending or juicing:

While we can’t promise that everyone will enjoy drinking green smoothies, you may want to consider trying them if you are struggling to incorporate fruits and vegetables into your diet. Our office manager Angela has a NutriBullet and loves her green smoothies! One of her favorite smoothies includes kale, spinach, a banana, and almond milk. The banana helps to naturally sweeten the smoothie and gives it more flavor.

Why the Danger of Tobacco Outweighs the Pleasure

Smoking cigarettes provides smokers with a pleasing experience. Smoking is also addictive and can have harsh consequences on one’s oral health.

This post is not meant to make those who smoke feel judged for their habits. However, it is important that if you or a loved one smokes, you understand the risks associated.

As stated in our older post, Tobacco & Your Teeth, the CDC has found that a smoker is twice as likely to develop gum disease than someone who does not smoke. This infection of the gums can lead to tooth loss and bone damage. 

If you are a smoker, here is what you can do to protect your teeth:

  • Maintain good oral hygiene. Brush your teeth twice daily and flossing once daily, as well as visiting your dentist every 6 months.
  • Stop smoking. This is likely the hardest advice to take, but your mouth – and the rest of your body – will be all the healthier if you stop smoking. If you are having trouble quitting or don’t know where to start, smokefree.gov has resources that can help.
  • Be on the lookout for the signs and symptoms of gum disease. Early signs of gum disease are red, swollen gums that bleed.
  • If you suspect that you may have gum disease, talk to your dentist. You may need to be referred to a periodontist for treatment.

No matter how old you are, it is never too early or too late to quit smoking.

There are so many things changing in our world today. Technology is everywhere, and social media is changing the way we communicate. While keeping up with all of these changes is easier for younger people, older Americans may find staying up-to-date more challenging. However, it is important for those in the 50+ age bracket to be understanding of today’s society. Doing so will help you get jobs, stay in touch with your family, and live a happy and healthy lifestyle overall.

Below, we have listed 22 things that you can do to stay current. Not everything on this list will apply to you – for example, you may already have a computer and watch TV. Our advice is to select the tasks that you can handle and work on completing a few at a time. Some of these tasks are harder than others, such as learning to use a smartphone, so be patient with yourself!

Social Media & Technology

  2. Learn to text. Speaking of texting, it has become one of the most popular forms of communication. While you may prefer to talk on the phone, learning how to text will probably encourage your children and grandchildren to contact you. | Recommended article: Texting for Seniors
  3. Download apps on your smartphone, and learn how to use them. The word “apps” is short for applications. Think of them as digital tools that will make life easier for you, whether you need to track your blood pressure or make a grocery list.
  4. Create at least one social media account, and check it regularly. Social media provides us with a great way to keep in contact with one another, especially if you live far from your family or friends.   5. Create an email address. Email is used to communicate what does not necessarily need to be said over the phone or sent via traditional mail. Sites such as Gmail and Yahoo will let you create a new email account for free.
  6. Purchase a computer. While smartphones are like mini computers, it is also useful to have a desktop computer or laptop.   7. Learn to video chat.  Video chatting is a wonderful way to keep in touch with others, and you may like it better than texting if you are the type of person who prefers communication by telephone. When you videochat, you can see the person that you are talking to on your computer or phone screen, and they can see you on theirs.
  8. Learn to use Google and YouTube. Nowadays, when someone is looking for information, they often search for it on Google or YouTube. Familiarize yourself with these websites, they can even help you accomplish some of the tasks on this list!

  10. Learn to use Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. If you want to get a job working in an office or substitute teaching, chances are you will need to know how to use Microsoft Office, and those working in other industries use these tools, too.   11. Get WiFi. Laptops, tablets, and smartphones use WiFi to connect to the internet. Chances are, when your grandkids come to visit, they will want to know your WiFi password.

  2. Engage with today’s youth. One of the easiest ways to understand today’s culture is to spend some time with young people.
